Madison Youth A defeated East Haven Youth A
14-0
2nd Round of the Playoffs
Crisafi Field at East Haven High
School was the site for the second meeting of the season between East Haven A and Madison A (East Haven
A won the previous match-up 19-13). The sky was clear and the air was cool for the noon game.
Madison ran the ball successfully as they drove into East Haven territory and ate up much of the first quarter.
East Haven had their chances at turnovers in this drive as Madison fumbled two snaps, but recovered both of them.
With the drive on East Haven's 40 yd line, Madison was presented with a 4th and long. They went
to the air and Trevor Angelo tipped away the pass. East Haven finally had the ball. Unfortunately,
the Easties didn't have the ball long as they went '4 and out'. Back on 'D', Madison
ran the ball on 1st down for a long TD (extra point was good).
The Easties
'O' returned to the field determined to get some momentum back. This determination met with some
initial success as Joe Cima and Nick Durso provided positive runs resulting in a 1st down. The positive
running dried up later in the drive as Madison stopped East Haven on 4th and 2. Time was winding down in
the half as the Yellowjacket's defense took the field. Durso, Cima, and Nico Ragaini provided the key
tackles to prevent any further scoring in the half.
The
Easties offense took the field for the 2nd half down 7-0. The first three plays produced
a gain of only one yard. On 4th and 9, East Haven fumbled the ball and Madison recovered. On
'D', Cima and Christian Silvernale recorded tackles setting up a 3rd and 11. On 3rd, Madison ran
the ball for 20 yds and a 1st down - Ragaini made the TD-saving tackle down field. East Haven then held
Madison to minimal gains on 1st and 2nd downs behind the tackling of Ragaini and Mike Lapointe. On 3rd
and 8, Jack Scalesse made a terrific open field tackle to prevent a certain TD run. On 4th and 4, Vin Paolillo
ran up from his cornerback position to stop the run short of the first. The Easties took over possession
on their own 15 yd drive. They were only able to move the ball towards mid-field when the drive stalled.
The game was now into the 4th quarter and East Haven needed a 'break' to get back into the game.
The D held Madison to minimal gains on 1st and 2nd downs behind Durso and Scalesse.
On 3rd and long, the Easties received that 'break' when Angelo intercepted Madison's pass.
East Haven had to do something now. On 1st down,
Durso took the hand-off, ran to his right, stopped, and threw a 20 yd strike to Ragaini. Madison's
linebacker did a good job to read the play, make the tackle, and prevent the TD. Momentum was clearly on
the Yellowjackets side. The ball was at Madison's 35 yd line. Unfortunately, East
Haven could only muster a 2 yd gain over the next 4 plays. Madison took over possession and with a few
1st downs they could run out the clock. 'Break #2' almost came on 1st down as Madison fumbled the
ball, but recovered. The drive continued as Madison had a few long runs and tacked on a late TD run (extra
point was good). Time ran out on East Haven A's game and season.
East Haven Youth A was 7-1 in the regular season and 1-1 in the playoffs - Overall record of 8 wins and 2 losses.

THE PLAYOFFS ARE HERE!
In this Round
1 playoff match-up, the future of East Haven Football assembled on the turf at Crisafi Field as Easties Youth A and B faced
off. The weather was clear, crisp and breezy for the late morning game. On the 1st series,
Easties A (behind the tackling of Vin Franco and McClay Marshall) forced a 3rd and long. On 3rd down, Frank
Longley was in the Easties B backfield multi-tasking as he tackled the ball carrier and jarred the ball loose.
Jack Scalesse recovered the fumble. Easties B defense did a great job to contain the Easties A running
game as they forced a '4 and out' offensive series. Easties B took over on their own 30 yd line.
Justin Brown took the hand-off on 1st down for an impressive 70 yd TD run down the right side. Back
on 'O', the Easties A Yellowjackets buzzed down the field behind the running of Joe Cima, Nico Ragaini, and Nick Durso.
On a key 4th and 1, Trevor Angelo ran the 'QB Keep' up the middle for a 1st down. With the
ball on the Easties B 20 yd line, Cima ran the ball up the middle for a TD. Angelo found Robert Proto on
the left side of the end zone for the extra point. Easties A was winning 7-6. Easties
B 'O' had a few nice runs and a 1st down to gain some momentum back. Proto then came up with a
big tackle on 3rd down for no gain, followed by Franco's tackle on 4th down for no gain.
Easties A then
jumped on the Cima Express as he ran the ball down the field behind the blocking of the 'O' line. Cima
finished the drive with a 10 yd TD run. Back on 'D', Marshall and Ragaini recorded tackles setting
up a 3rd and 5. Scalesse tackled the QB on a sweep play for no gain on 3rd down. Tyler
Spano ended the drive as he tackled the running back in the backfield on 4th down. Easties A took over
deep in Easties B territory. On 4th and 3 on the 22 yd line, Cima ran up the middle for a TD and he followed
that up with an extra point run. Easties A 'D' continued their stellar play as Joe Piscitelli pressured
the QB, forcing an incomplete pass. On 2nd down, Easties B fumbled the ball and Scalesse pounced on it
for his 2nd fumble recovery of the game. The half ended with Easties A up 20-6.
Easties A had the ball to begin the second half. On 2nd and 9, Durso blasted around right end
for 64 yd TD. Cima, Marshall, and Vin Paolillo provided the tackles to force a punt on 4th down.
Following the punt, Cima ran the ball for 40 yds on 1st down, but the ball was knocked loose and recovered by Easties
B on their own 10 yd line. Easties B drove the ball for a 1st down after a successful 4th and 2 run.
On 1st down, Proto made a superb open field tackle to prevent a long TD run. Christian Silvernale
followed that with a tackle for a loss in the backfield. Back to back QB sacks (by Marshall and Durso)
ended the Easties B drive. Easties A closed out the scoring on their next drive with a 1 yd TD run by Angelo.
Game 8
East
Haven Youth A defeated Cheshire Youth A 31-0
East
Haven returned home to play the Rams on a balmy, Fall afternoon. Behind the tough inside running of Joe
Cima and the quick outside running of Nick Durso, the Yellowjackets drove into Cheshire territory. On 4th
and 1 on the Rams 26 yd line, Trevor Angelo ran a successful 'QB keeper' to keep the drive alive. On
2nd down, Nico Ragaini sprinted around left end for a 25 yd TD. Ragaini ran to the sidelines long enough
to throw on his Defensive Hat and returned to record the first two tackles. Nick Durso and Frank Longley
also chipped in with tackles to force a '4 and out' for Cheshire. Cima put the Easties up 12-0
when he took the 2nd down hand off up the middle for a 40 yd TD. The defense returned to the field in impressive
fashion as Jack Scalesse had a tackle for no gain and Tyler 'Tank' Spano had a tackle after a short gain.
On 3rd and long, Durso chased down the QB forcing an incomplete pass.
After
the Cheshire punt, the Easties were driving again into Ram territory. Cima had a run of 16 yds.
Angelo completed a 17 yd pass to Justin Keish to put the ball at the 17 yd line. On 2nd down, Ragaini
ran the ball in for a 17 yd TD. However, the TD was called back due to an illegal block (15yd penalty).
The Rams D went on to halt the Easties drive and took over on downs. The Yellowjackets defense had
another great series as Durso had 2 tackles and Vin Franco pressured the QB forcing an incomplete pass. Cheshire
was forced to punt again. Durso wasted no time on 'O' as he went around right end on 1st down for
a 35 yd TD. With time running out in the half, the defense didn't want to give Cheshire any momentum.
McClay 'McLovin' Marshall had a tackle for a loss and Durso had a tackle on 2nd down after a short gain. With
3rd and long, the Rams QB dropped back for a pass. Christian Silvernale pressured the QB out of the pocket.
Durso chased the QB down forcing a fumble that Ragaini recovered. At the end of the first half,
the scoreboard (if it was working) read 18-0.
The second
half was more of the same good stuff for East Haven. The offense continued to block and run well, while
the defense was stellar with their pursuit and tackling. On the first D series , the Easties (behind the
tackling of Scalesse, Marshall, Cima, and Keish) forced a Ram punt. Cima and his offensive line marched
the ball down the field resulting in a 8 yd TD run. Angelo ran in the extra point. Cheshire
then embarked on their longest drive of the day. Silvernale, Spano, and Nick Kraszewski provided the tackling
to slow the drive and present the Rams with a 4th down in Easties territory. On 4th down, Franco and Scott
Crouch pressured the QB, forcing an incomplete pass. Angelo then ran the ball on 3 successive plays for
15 yds, 10yds, and 15yds. With the ball on the Rams 30, Marshall put his shoulders down and ran in for
an impressive TD. The Yellowjackets ended the game on defense as Franco and Joe Piscitelli provided the
tackles.
Game 7
North Haven Youth B defeated East Haven Youth A 25-6
The
afternoon started out in such a promising manner as the Giants won and the Cowboys lost to the lowly Rams. Unfortunately,
the positive Karma from 'Big Blue' did not transfer to the young Easties as they travelled to North Haven for their
late afternoon showdown. The Indians dominated both sides of the ball as they knocked the Yellowjackets from the
ranks of the undefeated. On the 2nd play of the game, North Haven ran for a 65 yd TD run. East Haven went
'4 and out' on their first series. Back on D, the Easties grabbed a sliver of momentum back when McClay
Marshall recovered a fumble on 1st down. East Haven could not capitalize on the turnover as the drive
was another '4 and out'. North Haven's impressive running attack took only two plays to score their
second touchdown (extra point was good). The score now stood at 13-0. East Haven had the ball three more
times - fumble lost, '4 and out' series, and interception - in the half with no points to show. Meanwhile,
the Indians tacked on another TD to run the score to 19-0 at the half.
On
the Easties 2nd offensive play of the 2nd half, North Haven picked up a fumble and returned it to inside the Yellowjacket's
5 yd line. On 3rd down, the Indians ran it in for the TD. Later in the half, the Easties went on their
best drive of the game behind the running of Joe Cima and Nick Durso, and also a 20 yd pass from Trevor Angelo to
Durso. With the ball on the Indian's 2 yd line, Durso ran the ball around right end for the TD (Only the
2nd touchdown this North Haven team has given up all season). That was it for the scoring as North Haven earned the
25-6 victory. A few positives to take from an otherwise gloomy Easties day are Nico Ragaini recorded 5 tackles, Angelo
had 5 pass completions, and the Easties' Fans once again filled the stands to capacity as they cheered
on their Yellowjackets
Game 6
East Haven Youth A defeated Madison
Youth A 19-13
The
Easties travelled to Strong Field at the Surf Club in Madison for a 'Battle of the Undefeated'. The weather
was beautiful (60's and clear) and the atmosphere was electric. The visitors' stands were filled to capacity, forcing
the remaining 'SRO' (Standing Room Only) East Haven crowd to find a spot along the rope line.
The 'electricity' quickly turned to shock and dismay when Madison ran the ball for a 65 yd TD on the first play of
the game. East Haven re-grouped and marched the ball down the field behind the running of Joe Cima, Nico Ragaini,
and Nick Durso. With the ball on Madison's 15 yd line, Durso ran in for a TD to tie the score at 6-6. Madison
answered right back as they drove the ball to the Easties 14 yd line. From there, Madison completed a TD pass (extra
point was good) to put them back in front.
Each
team had the ball one more time to close out the 1st half. Durso and Cima lead the running attack as East Haven drove
to Madison's 5 yd line. Madison kept the Easties out of the end zone on 4th and goal. Madison took over and
ran the ball to mid-field on their first play. Durso and Ragaini completed several key tackles to prevent any further
big runs. McClay Marshall closed out the 1st half with an impressive tackle and the score remained 13 (Madison)
to 6 (East Haven).
The
Easties had the ball to start the second half, but turned it over after a few plays on a fumble. The Easties defense
captured the momentum back in a Big Way: On 1st down -Tyler 'Tank' Spano had a key tackle at the line to save a probable
long TD run, On 2nd down - Mike Lapointe stopped the run at the line, On 3rd down - the D line forced Madison to fall
on a fumbled snap, and On 4th down - Spano brought down the runner short of the 1st down. With 'BIG MO'
back on the Yellowjackets' side, the inspired offense ran back out on the field with a new determination
and confidence. Trevor Angelo completed a 3 yd pass to Ragaini. Cima then ran it up the middle for
6 yds. On 3rd and 1, Ang
